The essence of working effectively with children, youth, and families lies in our ability to use everyday life events as they are occurring to help facilitate change. It's this focus which distinguishes Child and Youth Care from other forms of helping. This is especially true in situations where the worker participates actively in a person’s daily living in the home, school, or community.
This course is designed for those who work in afterschool, youth development, education, therapeutic environments, foster care - or any setting where the adult is engaged with young people in their daily lives.
This course will guide you to deeper appreciation and insight into how to help others move more effectively towards their desired goals. Through the activities and discussions in this course you'll strengthen your ability to:
SPECIAL ACCESS TO SELF-PACED LEARNING MODULES
At the beginning of the course you'll receive access to 7 self-paced modules which you can complete whenever is most convenient for you. Each module provides about 90 minutes of activities and includes suggested readings. In these modules you'll interact with material developed by Thom Garfat, Ph.D. and produced by Heather Sago, MSW, Program Coordinator of the Child and Youth Care advanced diploma program at of Fleming College in Ontario, Canada - all based on award-winning research into effective interventions with children and families.
WEEKLY LIVE COACHING AND DISCUSSION SESSIONS
Each week during the series you'll also have access to weekly 45-minute group coaching and discussion calls with James Freeman. In each of these interactive sessions you'll dive deeper into the course topics and have the opportunity to ask questions related to the application of the themes in your daily work.
At the end of the course, you'll receive a certificate of completion from the Academy for Competent Youth Work for 14 hours in the competency domain of developmental practice methods.
