CEO & Founder
After 30 years of experience working on the inside of nonprofits in youth development, education, and adolescent mental health (15 of those years in a CA Alliance/ACRC member organization) I stepped out on my own as a solopreneur.
I had an MA in organizational leadership, collected a few career awards, and had trained or consulted in over 10 countries. But more importantly, I had a ton of learning from my own experiences and failures.
I had been observing some troubling themes across the nonprofit sector. A scarcity mentality was causing middle and frontline levels of management (those closest to the client experience) to be overlooked, waiting until people “proved” themselves before investing to support them. There was a disconnect between corporate leadership training and the values of most nonprofits. Platitudes from trending management books weren’t creating lasting change and internal support for rising leaders, while well intended, often wasn't enough.
Good organizations were promoting their best people, but too often leaving them on their own to find success in their new role.
Most couldn’t take the time I did to go back to university for a leadership degree. And if they did, they still had to try to translate that into their day-to-day experience.
So, I set out to train 100 nonprofit leaders across North America as a pilot project with a handful of agencies willing to try it out and give me feedback. I listened and made adjustments. I learned from my mistakes.
Soon I was getting more and more requests. Nonprofits were interested in building leadership mindset and skills across all the levels of their organizations. They were using it to boost existing leadership teams, support newly promoted leaders, build their leadership bench, and to make progress toward equity in who and how they promoted people.
And now today Training Grounds offers industry-leading learning and development programs that help human service nonprofits close the gaps that limit teams and leaders from performing at their best.
I’m on a mission to create a better world by strengthening leaders and improving the organizational health of nonprofits who are there to meet the most critical needs in their community.
